Volvo EX30

2026-09-28 08:30:02

The Volvo EX30 is a fully electric compact luxury SUV built on Volvo Cars' dedicated EV platform, serving as the brand's smallest SUV model to date. Having made its global debut in 2023, the EX30 is produced and retailed in China by Volvo Asia Pacific. On 20 March 2026, the 2026 Volvo EX30 was officially launched, offering three variants: RWD Plus, RWD Long Range Ultra, and Twin Motor AWD Performance Ultra. Official recommended retail prices range from RM203,800 to RM255,800, alongside a limited-time promotional starting price of RM159,800. Slotted into the subcompact EV SUV segment, its key rivals include the smart #1 and Audi Q2L.

Design Language

The EX30 carries forward Volvo's signature Scandinavian minimalist aesthetic. Up front, it features a closed-off shield grille paired with the iconic "Thor's Hammer" LED headlights, while the Volvo iron mark integrates a "buckled safety belt" motif to highlight the brand's safety heritage. Blacked-out A-, B-, and C-pillars create a floating roofline effect. Round the back, it gets Volvo's trademark split "C"-shaped vertical LED taillights. In terms of dimensions, the SUV measures 4,233 mm in length, 1,838 mm in width, and 1,555 mm in height, with a 2,650 mm wheelbase. The Cross Country variant boasts a higher ground clearance for mild off-roading. Inside, the cabin embraces a minimalist theme, centered around a single 12.3-inch vertically oriented touchscreen on the dashboard. Sustainable materials feature heavily throughout the cabin, with 30% recycled content used for trim panels and seat upholstery, including recycled denim fibres, flax fibres, Nordico upholstery (crafted from pine oil resin), and tailored wool blends. Buyers can choose from four interior design themes and five ambient lighting presets.

Powertrain & Performance

The 2026 EX30 is available with single-motor rear-wheel-drive (RWD) and twin-motor all-wheel-drive (AWD) setups. Both the RWD Plus and RWD Long Range Ultra are driven by a rear-mounted Viri electric motor producing 200 kW (272 PS) and 343 Nm of torque, completing the 0–100 km/h century sprint in 5.7 seconds and 5.3 seconds, respectively. The Twin Motor AWD Performance Ultra packs front and rear Viri motors for a total output of 315 kW (428 PS) and 543 Nm, rocketing from 0 to 100 km/h in just 3.6 seconds. Top speed across all variants is capped at 180 km/h. For battery options, the RWD Plus features a 49 kWh REPT lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery offering a CLTC range of 410 km, while the RWD Long Range Ultra and AWD Performance Ultra share a 66 kWh Sunwoda nickel manganese cobalt (NMC) ternary lithium battery, delivering 590 km and 540 km of range, respectively. DC fast charging comes standard across the range, replenishing the battery from 10% to 80% in around 26 to 28 minutes.

Chassis & Handling

The EX30 is engineered on a bespoke EV platform, riding on front MacPherson struts and a rear multi-link independent suspension setup. As for drivetrains, the standard models feature a rear-motor, rear-wheel-drive layout, while the AWD Performance model utilizes an electric dual-motor AWD system. An electric power steering (EPS) setup complements the car’s compact and nimble footprint. Stopping power is handled by ventilated disc brakes all round paired with an electronic parking brake (EPB) with Auto Hold as standard. Kerb weights are rated at 1,757 kg for the RWD Plus, 1,770 kg for the Long Range Ultra, and 1,885 kg for the AWD Performance model. Boot capacity ranges from a practical 318 litres to 1,000 litres with the rear seats folded.

Cabin & Equipment

The EX30 does away with a conventional driver's instrument binnacle, consolidating all driving information onto the 12.3-inch portrait central touchscreen. The infotainment setup runs on Android Automotive OS powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 8155 processor, complete with 5G connectivity, over-the-air (OTA) software updates, and wireless Apple CarPlay. Voice control is activated via the "Hello, Xiao Wo" wake-up prompt, featuring continuous dialogue and contextual speech recognition. An industry-first Harman Kardon premium soundbar stretches across the top of the dashboard as standard kit. Standard comfort appointments across the range include a panoramic glass roof, power-operated tailgate, wireless smartphone charging, power-adjustable front seats with driver memory, 5-colour ambient lighting, and automatic climate control. The seats are wrapped in a combination of leatherette and fabric upholstery. In addition, an energy-efficient heat pump system is fitted to optimize driving range in colder conditions.

Safety & Driver Assistance

Safety remains central to the Volvo marque. The EX30 features a rigid safety cage body structure and 7 airbags, including a front-centre far-side airbag to mitigate occupant-to-occupant contact in side collisions. Volvo's WHIPS (Whiplash Protection System) is also fitted as standard on the front seats. On the active safety front, the SUV is equipped with the Volvo City Safety suite, providing round-the-clock detection of vehicles, pedestrians, cyclists, and low obstacles, backed by autonomous emergency braking (AEB). The Pilot Assist semi-autonomous driving system comes standard across all variants, providing Level 2 driver assistance capabilities. In terms of hardware sensors, the RWD Plus gets 2 cameras and 8 ultrasonic sensors, while the Long Range and AWD variants upgrade to 5 cameras and 12 ultrasonic sensors; all three variants are equipped with 5 millimetre-wave radars. Driver assistance features include full-speed Adaptive Cruise Control (ACC), Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), Lane Keeping Aid (LKA), Lane Centring, Traffic Sign Recognition (TSR), and Park Assist. Other active safety features include Driver Alert Control and Door Opening Alert. Warranty and ownership benefits include a 3-year unlimited-mileage vehicle warranty, an 8-year/160,000 km EV battery and high-voltage system warranty, 3 years of complimentary 24/7 roadside assistance, and 4 years of complimentary connected media data.

Market Performance & Reception

The Volvo EX30 has enjoyed strong global sales momentum since its debut, surpassing 100,000 cumulative units worldwide by January 2025, with retail sales maintaining steady figures throughout 2025. Thanks to its sharp product positioning, the compact EV has scooped major global accolades, including "Best of the Best" at the 2024 Red Dot Design Awards and the prestigious World Urban Car title at the World Car Awards. In the Chinese market, the 2026 EX30 has significantly lowered the entry barrier to premium EV SUV ownership with the addition of the accessible RWD Plus variant, generous trickle-down equipment, and attractive promotional pricing. As Volvo’s smallest yet most forward-thinking electric SUV, the EX30 has carved out a compelling niche among young urban drivers with its clean Scandinavian design, sustainable credentials, brisk performance, and uncompromised safety standards.
